Tacoma Sportscaster Launches new Sports Network SPSN
By Alex Benzegala
On March 3, longtime Sports Broadcaster Alex Benzegala launched a new Sports Network focused on local sports in the Tacoma and South Puget Sound called the South Puget Sound Network. Benzegala is a native of Gig Harbor, WA and has been broadcasting since 2006 when he started his radio career as the Play-by-play voice of the Peninsula Seahawks and Gig Harbor Tides basketball and football programs. While in high school, Benzegala also served as a producer for show on KLAY 1180 AM in Lakewood where he worked under legendary Tacoma Sportscaster Clay Huntington.
Benzegala earned the Clay Huntington Sports Communications Scholarship and continued his academic career at Concordia College in Minnesota. His radio broadcasting career took him to stops in Iowa, Missouri and North Dakota before moving back to Pierce County in 2022. Benzegala served as an announcer and reporter for Eli Sports Network and NFHS in 2022 and early 2023 before founding SPSN.
The mission of SPSN is to provide coverage for high school, collegiate and professional sports teams and athletes in the South Sound and by providing free audio streams of high school sports broadcasts in the South Sound. SPSN also hopes to honor the legacy of Clay Huntington by giving High School students in Pierce County valuable journalism experience broadcasting and reporting on athletics.
